Today, there are more free resources than ever to help you learn Persian. Dictionaries, podcasts, videos, writing tools… with so many options available, it can be difficult to know where to start.
In this article, I’ll share the resources I recommend most often. They’re easy to use, complement each other well, and can support you at every stage of your learning journey—whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your vocabulary.
📖 The FarsiSchool phonetic dictionary
If I had to recommend just one Persian dictionary, it would be the FarsiSchool Dictionary.
Every word is displayed both in the Persian alphabet and in phonetic transcription, making it especially useful if you haven’t learned to read Persian yet.
One of its best features is that you can hover over each letter in the phonetic transcription to see its equivalent in the Persian alphabet. This makes it much easier to connect pronunciation with writing as you learn.
It’s also an excellent tool when you’ve heard a Persian word but don’t know how it’s spelled.
The dictionary uses its own transcription system:
š = sh
č = ch
x = kh
q = gh
Once you’re familiar with these four letters, searching for words becomes much easier.
📝 Use your phone’s Notes app
Many learners look for sophisticated vocabulary apps, but one of the most effective tools is probably already on your phone: the Notes app.
Create a folder called Persian, then organize your vocabulary by topic:
🏠 Home
🍽️ Food
👨👩👧 Family
🚗 Transportation
…and so on.
Every time you learn a new word, add it to the appropriate category.
Here are a few simple tips to make this method even more effective:
• Add an emoji next to each word (🍎 apple, 🚗 car, 📚 book…). Visual cues help your brain remember vocabulary more easily.
• Keep the words you struggle with at the top of each list so you review them every time you open your notes.
• Take advantage of spare moments during the day to read through your vocabulary for just a few minutes.
These short but frequent review sessions are often much more effective than one long study session.
🎬 Learn Persian with videos and movies
Language immersion doesn’t only happen in the classroom. Watching YouTube videos, movies, TV series, or interviews in Persian is one of the best ways to get used to the language as it’s actually spoken.
Even if you only understand part of what you hear, your brain gradually becomes familiar with Persian sounds, rhythm, and the most common words. Over time, you’ll be surprised by how much you understand without even realizing it.
💡 Two Persian series to watch on ARTE
If you’re looking for authentic Persian content, ARTE offers two excellent series that you can stream for free, with no subscription required.
🎬 Happiness (Beginner to intermediate)
This mini-series follows Shadi, a 17-year-old girl who runs away with three friends on a journey across Iran in search of her father. Along the way, she discovers different aspects of the country while reflecting on freedom, family, and happiness.
The episodes are only about 6 minutes long, making them perfect for learners. They are entirely in Persian and include English subtitles, allowing you to gradually improve your listening comprehension.
🎭 The Actor (Intermediate to advanced)
If you’re looking for longer episodes or you’re already comfortable with basic Persian, The Actor is an excellent choice. The story follows two talented actors who use their acting skills to carry out undercover missions until one assignment draws them into a much more dangerous situation.
With episodes lasting around 50 minutes, richer dialogue, and a gripping storyline, it’s an excellent way to immerse yourself in authentic spoken Persian while enjoying a critically acclaimed series.
🌍 Glosbe: English-to-Persian dictionary
If you’re looking for English-to-Persian translations, Glosbe can be a useful resource. The website usually offers multiple translations, and many entries include audio recordings of the pronunciation.
However, it’s worth using with caution. Because part of the content is community-generated, some translations may be incomplete, inaccurate, or lack context. Whenever possible, verify new vocabulary using another reliable source before memorizing or using it.
🎧 Improve your listening with the Farsi Khuneh podcast
Listening is one of the most important parts of learning a language. That’s why I created the Farsi Khuneh Podcast, where I speak Persian at a pace that is accessible to learners. Each episode focuses on everyday topics and is designed to help you become familiar with natural spoken Persian.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything. The goal is simply to listen regularly and allow your ears to become accustomed to the sounds, rhythm, and expressions of the language.
⌨️ The Lexilogos Persian keyboard
If you’d like to learn how to write in Persian—or simply become familiar with the alphabet—the Lexilogos virtual keyboard is an excellent resource. Each letter is accompanied by its phonetic transcription, helping you gradually understand the relationship between Persian sounds and writing.
You can use it to write your first words, practice typing in Persian, or simply recognize the letters.
Final thoughts
There isn’t a perfect resource or a magic method for learning Persian. What really makes a difference is exposing yourself to the language on a regular basis. A few minutes of listening, a handful of new words saved on your phone, a quick dictionary search, or a short video in Persian—these small habits add up over time and lead to real progress.
You don’t need to study for hours every day. What matters most is staying connected with the language consistently and enjoying the learning process. Here at Farsi Khuneh, you’ll find even more resources to support your Persian journey, including practical articles, a learner-friendly podcast, and one-to-one lessons if you’d like personalized guidance.
Happy learning!
